☆ 'to stand'는

형용사적 용법의 부정사로 사용되어 

'Your grace'를 후치 수식.

☞ 여기서
strong은 부사가 아니라 형용사.

'stand strong'에서 

strong은 

동사 stand를 보충하는 역할을 하지만, 

부사가 아니라 형용사로 사용되었음.

일반적으로 동사를 수식하는 단어는 

부사이지만, 

 

'stand strong'은 

관용적으로 

"강하게 서다, 흔들림 없이 버티다"라는 

의미를 가지며, 

 

이때 strong은

형용사적 용법으로 사용.

비슷한 표현으로 

'stand firm'에서 firm도 형용사.

관용적으로 사용되는 표현이며, 

문법적으로 보면 strong을 

형용사로 해석하는 것이 일반적.

왜 형용사로 해석하는가?

stand는 자동사이고, 

자동사는 일반적으로 부사를 필요로 하지만, 

보어 역할을 하는 형용사를 받을 수도 있음.

stand는 뒤에 형용사를 받아 

주어의 상태를 설명하는 역할.

주어의 상태를 표현하는 

동사 보어로서 strong이 

형용사 역할을 한다고 보는 것이 자연스러움.

strong을 형용사로 보면, 

stand는 주어의 상태를 설명하는

2형식 동사.

부사로 봐도 되는가?

문맥상 stand strong에서 

strong을 부사로 본다고 하더라도 

의미 전달에는 큰 문제가 없음. 

 

하지만 

일반적으로 strongly 같은 

부사가 쓰일 법한 자리에서 

strong이라는 형용사가 사용된다는 점이 

특이한 부분. 

 

이는 영어에서 자주 보이는 

형용사 사용 관용 표현의 한 예로 볼 수 있음.

예를 들어, 
다음 표현들도 같은 방식으로 형용사가 사용:

Think big.
 (크게 생각해라)
Dream big.
 (크게 꿈꿔라)
Sleep tight.
 (푹 자라)

따라서, 
stand strong에서 
strong을 형용사로 보는 것이 일반적이지만, 

부사로 해석한다고 해서 

의미가 틀리거나 문제가 생기는 것은 아님. 

 

영어에서는 관용적 표현으로 

형용사가 쓰이는 경우가 많다는 점을 고려하면, 

형용사로 보는 것이 

더 자연스럽다는 정도로 이해하면 될 것임.

'no matter what I am facing'은 

부사절.

'no matter what'은 

양보의 의미를 가진 

부사절 접속사 역할.

'what I am facing'은 

관계대명사 what이 포함된 절.

즉,
'What I am facing'은 
"내가 직면하는 것"을 의미하는 

명사절이지만, 

전체적으로 양보의 부사절로 기능.

'no matter'는 
"설사 ~일지라도, ~와 상관없이".

☞ 'keep + ~ing'

'keep on ~ing' 

(keep +

praying/believing/knowing)

타동사 know의 목적어(명사절).

☞ 'on the way'
     (~도중에)

'on the way'는 

be 동사의 보어로 사용된
